What the assessment session is like

Every visit starts at the centre´s reception office. At your first visit, a social worker creates your personal file so that all your further visits will be registered in our computer. Then you
continue to your assigned psychologist or a special pedagogist´s office. Due to numerous visits at the same time, you may be required to wait a couple of minutes.

Children and minors of age must be accompanied by their legal representative.

The first visit is usually conducted by a psychologist, followed by second inspection assessment by a psychologist or a special pedagogist. The complete assessment can take place in 1 day or 2 different terms. We generally prefer morning hours as the children are more relaxed and their concentration is better, so they are capable of higher performance. The average duration of one session is 2-2,5 hours. In case of a complete assessment (psychological as well as special pedagogical) and including breaks expect 5 hours.

At every occasion a counselling service is provided, an Informed consent regarding the provision of a counselling service and processing of personal data has to be signed. The first session aims at clarifying of the nature of the problem and starts with an initial interview. In case it´s your very first visit, we will be interested in essential information about the child´s anamnesis (early development, school anamnesis, hobbies, health condition…). All these information help us to get a better insight into a issue that you come with. The initial interview is followed by an assessment procedure which is usually conducted without the presence of parents. The assessment procedure may be split into various sessions. Subsequently, the parents are informed about concluded results and resulting recommendations and the form of recollection of written report is agreed. The recollection of the report is possible in person at the counselling centre´s office (preferred) as a signature confirming your consent (that you have understood the contents and do not file any objections) is required. In exceptional cases it is possible to send the report to your home address (a stamped envelope is required).

The advantages of coming early:
Your timely arrival allows your child and yourself to become acquainted with the new environment which contributes to the child´s feeling of safety and will to collaborate. The psychologists and special pedagogists plan each session very carefully in respect to the age of the child and the nature of his or her problem, so the time reserved for the assessment suits the child and efficiency of the assessment. Therefore being late may bring the need to reschedule the session for other term for which you may be asked to wait for several weeks.

What should you bring with you to the assessment session?

  • Expert opinions and reports from previous psychological or special-pedagogical assessments that had taken place at other centres, questionnaire for schools filled in by child´s teachers, medical reports issued by e.g. neurologist or psychiatrist. These help to clarify the origins of present situation and accelerate the finding of solution.
  • Records and parents´ notes of development of the child, such as the “Memory book”. During your first visit you will be asked about data of this kind on your child ranging from his or her birth until the present, such as the height and weight as a toddler, when your child started to speak, crawl, walk, which illnesses he or she suffered from in his or her infancy…
  • A snack and a drink for the child (and perhaps for yourself as well), some entertainment for the child such as a magazine, a book, favourite toy or a game. A single session in a counselling centre may take up to 2,5 hours (in case of a complex psychological assessment). The child is going to spend part of the time in a waiting room (usually during psychologist´s initial or final interview with the parent) and so is the parent, so be prepared, especially if you consider bringing the child´s sibling along. In case of a preschool or a rather anxious child is even recommended. Think about yourself as well so bringing a book or a work task may be a good solution how to use time while waiting.
